Since for our fon needs something like sputnik is mostly useless...wouldn't it be nice to have a version with openVPN installed instead of sputnik? or removing something else useless to make space for openVPN?!? mmm...just to say...maybe freddy will make another magic
mmm...QoS...VoIP..mmm....ops...i'm asking a lot now but hey...who knows...miracles happens... |

Yeah, I kinda raised my eyebrows when I found out what was left out to make the smaller versions of DD-WRT, and what was left in. Seemed like the combinations should have been different.
However, I have read that Brainslayer is willing to make custom firmwares with the apps that you desire. You'll probably want to make a donation to his website before asking, though. _________________ Well, as Revolutions go, this one has certainly been revolting!

here's my custom firmware
http://fon.freddy.eu.org/dd-wrt/
| Quote: | Freddy's custom DD-WRT firmware
v 1.00
based on: DD-WRT v23 SP2 (08/11/06) std (SVN revision 3469)
added FON heartbeat script (enable syslog to make sure it's working)
updated chillispot to latest CVS Version (20060214), due to a new feature: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/bugtracker/view.php?id=1624
removed kaid
removed telnet
removed sputnik
removed samba
warning. this version adds encryption to the http username and the password.
where flawless upgrade is supported it will not be possible to downgrade to a previous version without a full reset.
keep this in mind before testing

hey Freddy if I install this firmware on my Fon router it will allow me control of the router while still allowing me to manually of my own accord provide a wifi hotspot? I'm sorry but im not an expert on this kind of stuff, hence I can't really follow this thread conversation haha. |

neon: all you need to host a hotspot is a wifi router. You need fon or other firmware (like DD-WRT or OpenWRT) that can run Chillispot if you want to authenticate members of fon's database. Freddy's firmware is DD-WRT with some unnecessary options removed to make more available memory.
There are lots of other outfits that provide router software to make your hotspot more secure. Save this list because fon might erase this entry like the last time I posted these links:Most of these firms simply sell preconfigured routers with DD-WRT or OpenWRT firmware and Chillispot, and charge to use their RADIUS servers to authenticate customers. In my honest opinion, what all of these people charge is outrageous considering that *WRT, Chillispot, OpenRADIUS and FreeRADIUS are all free... people should just build their own complete networks. The web interfaces for remote administration and statistics are probably the real value-added with the preconfigured deals.
freddy: awsome feat, man! Some of us did a little hacking, some others did some scripts; you up and compiled a whole firmware!
You might consider working on the backend of the deal too, and make an Free/OpenRADIUS config file that we can just plug in and start authenticating our own users, along with some .php to add and manage members, and interface with PayPal. Who needs fon and their 50% tithe? _________________ Well, as Revolutions go, this one has certainly been revolting!

Great work Freddy !
Haven't tried your custom build yet but will do due to the memory gain.
Ideas for inclusion:
Secure setup as per dema's http://boards.fon.com/viewtopic.php?t=957
Some help so not to slow down the router while using P2P applications:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/P2p (can also be set permanently in nvram)
Keep up the good work !
P.S. If someone else would like to make their own custom firmware, this link may be useful:

We're using our own RADIUS server already (+own login page), due to we have ~1800 people that should be able to login, but FON users are still forwarded to the FON Radius Servers.
Don't expect me to provide a fon independend login system, I'm a Linus _________________ status: Linus

Can you please clarify what this mean?

it's the warning from dd-wrt.com
since v23 SP2 the username is also encrypted that means you have to reset settings to factory defaults if you want to downgrade to fon/dd-wrt SP1 again.
A small work-around to be able to downgrade without resetting is described here:

Thank you Freddy, and let us keep it that way. Never could stand leechers myself, and that's a final version of my opinion. _________________ We are not pshychics, with 99% certainty - (c) FON

Hi there,
I hope this is the right thread to drop the question.
I got my WRT45GL from Fon yesterday and flashed it with Freddy's custom firmware (thanks for that). I configured the Hotspot options as shown in the other thread and Fon is working great. I get redirected to the login-page and get authenticated by Fon.
But that is not working for local users. I have configured local users on the Linksys (on the hotspot page), but I get an error on the login-page, trying to authenticate that user. No message in the syslog either.
Maybe I have forgotten something. I did not run the fon.cgi-script, perhaps the mistake?
Little question: the heartbeat script is included into this firmware? How can I tell if everything is running? Is it the functionality of the heartbeat script if I can see on the Fon page who is logged onto my router?
Thanks in advance,
Matthias |

never tested the local user feature, try dd-wrt.com or chillispot.org forums

From the readme:

I think the "who is on" list is don by the radius server, but you're right, dosn't work for me too. Probaply they are using a modified version of chillispot... _________________ status: Linus

No, I meant that that is indeed working.
Regarding the other problem I will try the other forums. Hopefully they will not route me back here again, because I try to login trough the Fon page

oh god...
i already killed my router 3 times...
Thanks tftp, without you, i would be creating black and blue bricks...
Well, today i compiled the 6th firmware.
The first was good, but haven't removed anything and also, had some troubles not being able to write to dirs. it was mini based.
the second was a minor update of the first: the dirs i couldn't create, created them and compiled the fw.
then, i bricked once, twice, three times the router (the commodores music plays in background...).
well, today i made the 6th firmware. i have removed Kaid, Sputnik (manually, i think), wol (also manually) and pptp + pptpd (i don't think i need this, am i right?). I leave all the rest, including chillispot so i can have a fon router.
Haven't played iet with dual SSID and added setserial, bwm, bwbar, sntop, uptimed and wavemon, including dependencies (libncurses, libpng and zlib).
Hope when i arrive home, and flash it, it works...
now let's supose this: i flash it, it runs, and when i try to use, for example, bwbar, let's supose it says "cannot create /etc/init.d/xpto" i could create a link of xpto to /tmp/xpto, right?
is there any other thing i should remove/install?
oh, i forgot the hearbeat thing... where should i put it BEFORE compilation?
Thanks to all who have been helping me to compile this custom firmware. as soon it is stable, i'll post it here for everyone interested. |

OK, I circumvented the problem a bit. I have installed my own radius-server, which is working great and now I can also use macauth to automatically authenticate wlan-devices.
Is there a working howto for this? I could wrap something up, if there is the need for it?
Perhaps I try the v24 for multiple SSIDs. That is the only thing bothering me right now.

I put fonkey to /etc and thinclient to /usr/sbin, make sure you edit paths of thinclient/fonkey in the script _________________ status: Linus
